Why Visibility Matters: Showing Up as a Black Woman in Business

Showing up isn’t always easy — especially when you’re a Black woman navigating the world of entrepreneurship. In March, I found myself reflecting deeply on visibility. Not the kind where you post just for likes, but the real, raw kind where you share your journey, your setbacks, your wins, and even your confusion.

Being visible online can feel overwhelming. Between the pressure to be perfect, the fear of being judged, and the general exhaustion of just doing the most, it’s easy to shrink. Easy to say, “I’ll post tomorrow.” Easy to stay behind the scenes. But what I’ve learned — and keep learning — is that being visible isn’t just for the algorithm. It’s for the community watching. It’s for the girl who looks like me, wondering if she can do it too. Spoiler alert: she absolutely can.

This month reminded me of the power of simply being seen. Whether I’m showing up on TikTok talking about debt, walking into a room to speak as a founder, or posting behind-the-scenes chaos from my business life — it all counts. Because visibility, for me, is about representation. It’s about rewriting the narrative. It’s about taking up space boldly, even when I feel unsure.

And let’s be honest — the world isn’t always kind to Black women who dare to shine. We get labelled “too loud,” “too much,” “too confident,” or “not enough.” We get policed on our tone, our looks, our success, our failures. But what I’ve realised is that shrinking won’t save us. Shrinking won’t make things easier. Shrinking only keeps the cycle going.

So this March, I made a decision: to stop waiting until I “have it all together” to show up. To stop curating my story to make it palatable. I’m not here to perform. I’m here to be. Fully. Loudly. Unapologetically.

To the Black woman building her business in silence — I see you. To the one who’s scared to press “post” because she’s worried what people will say — I feel you. And to the one who’s been told to play it small to be accepted — I hear you. But I want you to know: Your presence matters. Your story matters. You matter.

Showing up is more than branding — it’s activism. It’s resistance. It’s freedom. And the moment we own that is the moment we start to shift everything — not just for ourselves, but for everyone watching.

So whether you’re posting once a week or once a month, whether you’re creating content or just showing up in real life spaces — do it boldly. Do it your way. And know that in doing so, you give permission for someone else to do the same.

Let them watch. Let them learn. Let them be inspired.

Because the world needs to see you. Fully. Visibly. Unapologetically.
